The Gift (5K)

The Gift

Notes to the Reader: This story may deal with mature subject matter in later chapters; it certainly includes references to human sexuality and mores of all sorts, but particularly those of the Roman Empire circa 73 CE. Those easily offended by frank sexual references should read with caution, and those under age (whatever it is in your corner of the world) not at all.

Please remember that opinions expressed by characters are not necessarily those of the author.

Part I. In which we meet Gaius Longinius Corvinus, mild-mannered Roman shipping clerk by day and illicit student of Magic by night; in which his father manages to bollocks-up his life rather spectacularly; and in which we travel from Rome to Liguria, and meet obnoxious little sisters and potentially evil prospective father-in-laws.

Part II. In which Gaius meets his bride and acquires her as his wife (as well as a disreputable Greek slave); we attend a Roman wedding; and Gaius gets the hell out of Dodge and on his way back to Rome as quickly as possible.

Part III. In which the odd little trio arrives safely in port; Gaius introduces Julia to Rome; they hire the most blatant, flamingly-gay real-estate agent in all Rome and acquire a house; and in which Gaius realises he's forgot what's really important, and decides to act like a git.

Part IV. In which Gaius proves he can be a massive git; he acquires the nastiest cook in Rome; and a thief in the shipping business promises to make life difficult.

Part V. In which the household ghost takes care of the nasty cook, and we meet one of Gaius's more unpleasant relatives.

Part VI. In which Hyperion scores (in a manner of speaking); Primus proves exactly how much a fool he is; and Gaius tries to do the right thing, mucks it up, and manages to do something nice nevertheless.

Part VII. In which Gaius really screws up, and then manages to begin to get his head straight on several matters.

Part VIII. In which Julia recovers nicely; Gaius faces the Grand High Pooh-bah/Inquisitor -- twice; Primus gets good news, predictably (and with the Author's apologies) nearly screws his life up again, and nearly takes Gaius with him.

Part IX. In which Gaius rids himself of several noxious substances (including bits of his pride), and acquires several important things (only II out of III of them positive).

The Obligatory Disclaimer: The Gift is a conjectural historical fiction based on J.K. Rowling's Potterverse, but does not include any of her characters; it may include spells and other conventions as detailed in the Harry Potter series. All characters in The Gift (with the exception of actual historical persons and two borrowings from Lindsey Davis) are my creations: if you want to play in this particular version of the universe and with my characters, please ask first.
