Firefly
Something
in Leather by Mosca
Zoe/Wash, Mal/... well, you figure it out - Zoe puts on leather. What - you
need more? This is very clever Zoe/Wash fic that manages to be about the whole
crew and a little more about Mal. And then there's Zoe in leather...
Eight
First Kisses by Sophia Prestor
River/Everyone - A very simple, sweet and pretty River piece that is also an
insightful study of the entire Firefly gang. Strangely, each imagined scenario
seems more likely than the last. Very curious and thoughtful.
About
a Girl by Molly
Excellent River characterization, ragged and jagged and wanting to be useful,
wanting to be loved. She sees a hole in Mal that needs filling, and she tries
to fill it herself. Beautiful. (River/Mal, adult)
Filtering
Eliot by Glossolalia
Beautiful, sharp Inara/River fic.
Khamsin
by Tigerlady
A shivery good Crazy Space Incest fic.
Like
Breathing by Cassie
Beautiful Zoe/Wash fic that gets the Zoe voice right and is a very in-character
and lovely look at how she may have fallen for Wash.
Reliance
by Roseveare
Long and engaging story about Serenity crash-landing on a planet and the way
the Mal deals (or doesn't, as the case may be). Brilliant, dead on Mal voice
that just makes me love him more, for the way he loves his ship and his crew.
Simply
Perfectest by Voleuse
Wash attempts to woo Zoe. Wry and sweet and a fabulous Wash voice.
Day
of the Dead by Amy
River, on Halloween. Haunting and creepy and beautiful. Amys River is
amazing dead-on (no pun intended), and this story of the dead haunting the living,
of the girl who can see them when all the others cant, is absolutely stunning.
Sotto
Voce by Thea
Oh, my God. It's so fucked-up. Yet so plausible in this particular version of
the 'Flyverse. Simon/River/Mal, and it's gorgeous, tar-bitter, and inexorable.
What a wreck. What a beautiful wreck. Goosebumps all over the place.
Things
Alchemical by Vehemently
"She rested her cheek against the back of his neck, above the collar of
his shirt like an ice pack or a yoke." This is a tiny gem of Firefly slice-of-life,
rich and lovely in a way that's hard to describe.
Mummys, Don't
Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys by Hossgal
This is adorable and hilarious and everyone's voice is just perfect. Guaranteed
to put a huge dorky grin on your face, or your money back!
Indelicate
by Mosca
Absolutely incredible and painful and horrifying and *believable*. River is
not afraid to take what she wants from the one person she thinks willing to
give it to her. And Jayne's desperation at the end is palpable. Amazing work.
(Jayne/River, non-con)
Mathematics
by Amy
I love this so so so much words can't even begin to describe it. It's absolutely,
utterly brilliant in its gentle humor, its willingness to accept the absurdities
of the 'verse, and its dead-on balls accurate River voice. And the language
is stunning. It's a crossover, but an exceptionally subtle one, and figuring
it out is part of the beauty of the story.
The
Shirt Affair by Hossgal
A Scorchin' hot Simon/Jayne, with a great Jayne voice. Who'd have thought gun-cleaning
could be so sexy? Yowza.
Scavenged
by Salieri
Mal and Kaylee go on a routine salvage mission that goes, as usual, horribly
wrong. Salieri gives us a tale that could have come right from Joss and Tim's
brilliantly sadistic minds, with spot-on Flyverse speech, gorgeous prose, and
characterizations that ring with terrible clarity.
Dangerous
Cargo by Nestra
Aw! This story is sweet, funny, hot, with crackling dialog and did I mention
the hotness yet? Nestra does fabulous Mal/Simon, but one of the things that
make this such a good story is that she doesn't skim on the rest of the Serenity
crew, who are fully fleshed-out and lovable.
The
Floating World (Murphy's Law Remix) by hossgal
hossgal takes the original story (Trust
by LJC) and fills in everything we don't know, from everyone else's perspective.
Another mission gone wrong for Serenity's crew the how and why are fascinating
and completely grow out of the characters' personalities and beliefs. I especially
love the River section, and some of the Simon stuff is just dead-on. Taken with
the original, these stories about who-all each character trusts, and it rings
incredibly true.
Means
of Expression (Go Thy Way Remix) by Molly
I have to admit, the original story didn't quite sell me on its central premise,
but this remix/expansion of it works wonders for making the whole thing make
sense, fit together in ways I hadn't thought were possible. Zoe has a baby,
and it changes everything and changes nothing at the same time. Lovely, with
Molly's usual delicate hand on the emotions and characterizations.
Time
Flies You Can't (The Da Sou Qiang Remix) by Sabine
This story is so very, very River that it hurts. It's beautifully River and
how she's dealing with the Simon/Kaylee and how she tries to help Mal and help
everybody and she just tries so hard to do everything right but she's all wrong
and she knows it. Man, this story had me on the edge of my seat, wanting to
know what River was going to do next. The original story, Waking
Hours by Molly, is
also worth checking out.
Elias
Budd's Charming Widow by pearl-o
My God, a Saffron-fic! And an honest-to-goodness
pitch-perfect Saffron fic to boot. I love this character from each and every
devious curl in her hair to the tips of her thieving toenails, and pearl-o just
captures her perfectly.
A
Pretty War by Kyra Cullinan
A gorgeous River vignette, about how she
sees Kaylee, sees Simon, and sees them altogether.
Utopia
by Salieri
Ahh, Jayne vs. the Reavers, something we
might have had the chance to see if the show had stayed on air, damnit. An unflinching
look at the lurking horrors of the 'Flyverse, told in eerie and gorgeous prose.
At
Ends by Northlight
Zoe in three stages, pre-Serenity.
The story has an interesting rhythm to it, like a snippet from an epic
poems set to song.
I
Have Gone Out by Shrift
"River dreams reality, and reality
dreams her." A lovely little vignette with insights into the each member
of the Serenity crew.
Repair
by Molly
Mal/Kaylee is not an easy 'ship
to sell, but Molly does so here with conviction and grace. Just lovely.
Overload
by Ana
This quiet River vignette post-"Objects
in Space" has an equal measure of sorrow and hope, with a nice River voice,
both tangential and precise.
Ritual
by Pearl-o
Three snapshots about Simon and
River - where they were, where they are, and one place they might end up,
and it's not pretty, but it's *true* - you can feel it coming off them
in waves. I don't know who Joss thought he was fooling with this pair,
but Pearl-o gets right to the heart of them in all their scary, crazy,
intense love.
Lex
Talionis by Tara O'Shea
Tara expertly weaves different timelines,
giving us the aftermath of a tragedy in the present, alternating with spot-on
flashbacks to Kaylee's past. With such all-too-plausible storylines and
terrific character voices, this could have come straight from the mouth
of Joss. It also made me miss the show acutely. *grumblegrumble gorramFOX*
Ever
Get the Feeling by Inalasahl
A wonderful Simon character study
set after "Objects In Space", this is a quiet emotional journey that proves
to be richly rewarding in the end.
On
the Mend by MollyTM –
Lovely post-War Stories fic in which
Kaylee and Mal discuss some things.
Big
Damn Zombies, Sir by Shrift
Jayne's acting....odder than usual
and guess what his newest craving is? Shrift's priceless response to the
Brain-Eating Good zombie challenge is *insane* in the best possible way
and guaranteed to make you pee your pants with laughter.
Of
History by Northlight
Zoe voice is tough to get right,
but Northlight does an outstanding job here. This is Zoe's past and present,
told in terse yet lyrical prose.
That
Old Yen Shen Story by Tara O'Shea
I don't know how she did it, but
Tara managed to capture the voice of each crew member of Serenity *exactly*
right. I swear, I could hear the characters say these lines in my head.
Add to it an interesting plot, humor, and character insights, and it plays
like a missing episode of the show.
Fever
Dreams by Nicole Clevenger
Simon and River. There's just something
about these two that pushes your buttons, you know? I loved the way Simon's
consciousness weaved in and out of lucidity and delirium in the story.
Unsettling and exquisite.
White
Flag by Rachel Lee Arlington
A completely endearing Jayne/Simon,
funny and sweet.
Leaving
Serenity by Celli
Mal contemplates his ship, and what
she means to him. Actually, a much better story than my lame summary makes
it sound. Feels real, true to the character.
